School Information

Tokyo International School (TIS) is a non-profit, fully authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School in central Tokyo. We are committed to providing a seamless, holistic education dedicated to
meaningful learning and student wellbeing.

TIS offers the complete IB curriculum continuum (PYP, MYP, and DP) for students from Kindergarten (age 5) through Grade 11. Our final expansion will be complete in the 2026/2027 academic year with the addition of Grade 12, establishing TIS as a full K–12 institution. This coincides with our campus relocation to the state-of-the-art TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY development.

We are a richly diverse community where approximately 380 students representing over 80 countries study together, creating a truly international, non-dominant culture environment. Our faculty members also come from around 18 countries, bringing a broad mix of international experience and educational perspectives.

Students from Grade 6 and above engage in challenging annual domestic residential study trips across Japan and ski trips, providing essential opportunities for community building, resilience, and real-world application of concepts. Students in Grade 5 and below reinforce classroom learning through frequent, curriculum-integrated excursions to museums, cultural sites, and facilities across the city.

TIS supports student passions through a robust co-curricular program featuring over 50 different activities. This program encompasses competitive sports, a thriving array of fine arts, and a wide range of
academic and cultural activities.

Admission Requirements and Selection Process

Admission Requirements
Applicants must fulfill the following application requirements:

  • Academic Transcripts: Provide school reports from the student’s previous and current schools (2 years for Grades 1-10; 1.5 years for Kindergarten; specific transcripts for Grade 11).
  • Confidential References: Submit the required number of Confidential Reference Forms (CRFs), filled out by current teachers via the online system.
  • Parent English Proficiency: At least one parent must be capable of communicating with the school in English without the help of a translator.
  • Student Assessment: A student interview and/or screening test may be required at the discretion of TIS, once the file is completed and a space becomes available.
  • Required Documentation: Completed Online Application Form and supporting documents (passport/birth certificate, photos, and any recent standardized tests or psycho-educational evaluations).

Selection Process
Admission is granted upon meeting the entrance criteria, successful file review, and the availability of space in the appropriate grade.

The selection process is criteria-driven and is carefully considered based on the following factors:

  • Priority: Siblings of currently enrolled students are given priority when all other entrance criteria are met.
  • Class Balance: Admissions decisions are adjusted to maintain balance within the class profile, considering factors such as:
    • Balance of languages, genders, and academic strengths.
    • Suitability of the student for the school’s educational program.
    • Nationality ratios and academic requirements.
  • Wait Pool: The wait pool is not a “first come, first served” numbered waitlist. Instead, applicants in the wait pool are reviewed against the above criteria to determine who best supports class balance once space becomes available.
  • Withdrawal of Offer: TIS reserves the right to withdraw an offer if applicants fail to provide accurate information or withhold important learning documentation (e.g., Psychological Evaluation Reports, IEPs, or support plans)
